Jaya Bachchan, Shabana Azmi Lead Celeb Line At Rakesh Kumar’s Funeral

Mumbai [India]Nov 13 (ANI): Tributes poured in for veteran actor-filmmaker Rakesh Kumar, who passed away at the age of 81 on Thursday after a long battle with cancer.

Jaya Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan and Shabana Azmi attend a prayer meet organized for the late filmmaker in Mumbai’s Andheri on Sunday.

Abhishek and Jaya Bachchan were seen leaving the prayer meeting in separate vehicles. Shabana Azmi also appeared on this occasion.

Several other members of the film fraternity reached the venue to pay their last respects to the filmmaker.

On learning of the death of the man behind some of his most loved and talked about films, Bachchan took to his blog to express his condolences.

In a post titled ‘Day 5387’, Bachchan or Big B, as he is called, expressed grief over Kumar’s demise. Reminiscing nostalgia, she revisited the great camaraderie that Kumar shared with her “on the sets and elsewhere, socially, during events and Holi”.

In extremely heartfelt words, Bachchan expressed how Kumar’s demise was a loss not only to him but also to the film industry.

“His understanding of script and direction, moment to moment writing and execution and the fun times on location during Nattu and Yaarana.. his complete faith in his ability.. and the ease with which he would give us the freedom of skipping. On odd days shooting, just to be able to have a relaxing time and be in uncontrollable laughter and glee,” wrote Bachchan.

Bachchan described the filmmaker-actor as “the most friendly and kind human being who was ready to put up with any kind of inconvenience that the artistes who worked with him faced..!”

Bachchan explained why he would not be able to summon Shakti to attend Kumar’s funeral.

The legend wrote, “I will not be able to bear the sight of a passive Rakesh.”

Saddened at Kumar’s death, Bachchan ended his blog post on an optimistic note. “Sad news anyone else too.. but life challenges every hour and you get bruised and damaged and walk.. then canter.. and finally run.. to overcome the injuries! !” Bachchan wrote.

Kumar was instrumental in the many box office successes of acting legend Amitabh Bachchan in the 70s and 80s, with Kumar in ‘Khoon Pasina’ (1977), ‘Mr. Natwarlal’ (1979) and ‘Yarana’ (1981).

Before starting his course as a successful filmmaker, Kumar was also an assistant director during the filming of the 1973 classic ‘Zanjeer’.

Kumar is survived by his wife, son and daughter. (ANI)
