JEE Main 2023: Bombay High Court to hear PIL on 75% eligibility criteria

According to the PIL, several JEE Main aspirants have demanded that the 75 per cent and top 20 per cent criteria should be removed or reduced to 50 per cent this year.

The Bombay High Court will hear tomorrow, February 21, a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) challenging the qualifying criteria of 75 per cent and top 20 per cent for Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main 2023.

According to the PIL, several JEE Main aspirants have demanded that the 75 per cent and top 20 per cent criteria should be removed or reduced to 50 per cent this year. Sharing the information, Advocate Anubha Srivastava Sahai said that the PIL on JEE Main will be heard on 21 February.

“JEE matter item no. 31 on 75 percentile / top 20 percentile criteria listed on 21st February before the Hon’ble Chief Justice of Bombay High Court. Till now no one has filed any IA. No affidavit has been filed by Education Ministry” read a tweet posted by Advocate Sahai.

JEE Main aspirants are not happy with the revised guidelines, claiming that there is no uniformity in the eligibility criteria of ‘top 20 percentile’ and varies from board to board.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) had earlier revised the JEE Main 2023 eligibility criteria. Candidates who qualify for admission through the main examination must have secured 75 percentile marks or must be in the top 20 percentile in the board examination.

In the brochure of Joint Entrance Examination of 2023, Indian Institutes technology (IIT) reintroduced the eligibility criteria of 75 per cent marks in class 12 board exam for admission to the national institute. technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs).

In January this year, the Bombay High Court refused to postpone the first attempt of JEE Main 2023, which was scheduled to be held on January 24. The High Court was hearing a petition seeking postponement of JEE Main 2023 and relaxation of 75 per cent eligibility criteria. The Bombay HC was hearing a petition filed by activist Anubha Srivastava Sahay.
