JEE Mains 2023: Marks relaxation for top 20 percentile board students

According to education ministry sources, the top 20 percentile students of each education board will now be eligible to take admission in IITs and NITs and appear for JEE Advanced even if they have not scored 75 percentile in class 12th.

The decision comes in the backdrop of persistent demands to relax the eligibility criteria for JEE (Advanced), which requires at least 75 per cent marks in aggregate in class 12 examination conducted by the respective education board.

“As per the Information Bulletin of Joint Entrance Examination (Main)-2023, candidates who qualify for admission to NITs/IITs and CFTIs and for admission on the basis of JEE (Main) rank, must have secured at least 75 in class % marks should be obtained. According to a statement by the National Testing Agency (NTA), the 12th examination conducted by the respective boards.

The National Testing Agency has received several representations from stakeholders regarding the change in the criteria of 75% marks in class 12th examination.

Keeping the above in view and in the interest of the students, it has been decided that the eligibility conditions for admission to NITs, HIITS and CFTIs through Central Board of Seat Allocation (CSA) are given below:

To qualify for admission to NITs, IIITs and other CFTIs whose admission is based on JEE (Main) rank, candidates must have secured at least 75% marks in class 12 examinations or be in the top 20 percentile . Class 12 exams are conducted by the respective boards. For SC/ST cadets, the qualifying marks in 12th examination should be 65%.

The online registration for the first edition of JEE-Main will end on January 12. The exam will be conducted from January 24 to 31.

As per the JEE (Main) 2023 Information Bulletin, admission to BE/BTech/BArch/BPlanning programs in NITs, IIITs and CFTs through the Central Seat Allocation Board will be based on All India Rank with an additional merit of at least 75 per cent. Aggregate percentage in class 12th exam conducted by the concerned education board.

“The 20 percentile norm will help candidates who score less than 75 percentile aggregate in their class 12 board. Discussions were held and since many of the top 20 percentile candidates in many state boards score 75 percentile marks or less than 350 marks A source said, the ministry decided that if a candidate is in the top 20 percentile then he is eligible.

Meanwhile, the Bombay High Court on Tuesday refused to postpone the JEE Mains exam scheduled for later this month.

A division bench of Chief Justice SV Gangapurwala and Justice Sandeep Marne said that postponing the all India exam in response to a public interest litigation would not be appropriate as it would affect lakhs of IIT aspirants.

The PIL was filed by child rights activist Anubha Sahai, who wanted the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main to be postponed till March.

The petition challenges the December 15 notification of the National Testing Agency (NTA), which has scheduled the exam from January 24 to January 31, 2023.
