Jewar International Airport: PM Modi will lay the foundation stone for UP’s development engine tomorrow. 10 points

Preparations are underway on the eve of the foundation stone laying ceremony of Jewar airport by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Gautam Budh Nagar district.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone of the international airport at Jewar in Gautam Budh Nagar on Thursday. When completed, it will be the fifth international airport of Uttar Pradesh.

The much-awaited project is being flagged off a few weeks ahead of the announcement of the UP Assembly election schedule. Earlier, PM Modi had inaugurated the Kushinagar International Airport on 20 October. Another international airport is under construction in Ayodhya.

PM Modi to lay foundation stone of Jewar International Airport key points

  1. The construction work of a new greenfield airport at Jewar in Greater Noida will start within this week. “The actual construction work will start within this week,” said Arunveer Singh, CEO, Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Zone, which is a major participant in the PPP project.
  2. “We plan to complete the first phase and be operational by September 2024.” According to Singh, the airport will have a runway as well as a terminal building in September 2024. The first phase of the project will be completed at a cost of about Rs 5,730 crore.
  3. Funds of over Rs 30,000 crore have come in for several industrial and urban clusters that are located in this area such as the ‘Film City’.
  4. In terms of airport development, it will be designed and operated by Switzerland-based Zurich International Airport Limited AG (ZAIA) under a 40-year concession to NIA.
  5. The design of the airport is inspired by India and will include various elements synonymous with the architecture of the region.
  6. The terminal forecourt will have flights of stairs like the famous ghats of Varanasi and Haridwar, welcoming and bringing people together, said Christoph Schnelmann, CEO of Noida International Airport.
  7. Providing the look and feel of a mansion, a courtyard will allow fresh air and sunlight to enter the terminal building. Inspired by the region’s major rivers, a white, translucent, wavy roof will give the effect of a running river. The passenger terminal will feature intricately decorated lattice screens and red granite inspired by Indian architecture.
  8. The first phase of the massive project is expected to be completed by 2024, with a capacity of 12 million passengers per year.
  9. NIAL is about 72 km from IGI Airport, about 40 km from Noida, Faridabad and Ghaziabad, about 28 km from Greater Noida, 65 km from Gurugram and 130 km from Agra.
  10. Presently, it is connected through Yamuna Expressway. In addition, other multi-modal transport options are planned.
