A 42-year-old woman was crushed to death by a wild elephant in Barki Dundi village of Jharkhand’s Ramgarh district on Tuesday.

The incident took place when the woman along with two other women had gone to the field to collect Mahua leaves.

Suddenly an elephant reached there from the edge of the forest. The women panicked and started running, but the elephant caught hold of Pinki Devi (42) and slammed her to the ground holding her trunk. He died on the spot. Other women managed to escape safely.

As the news of the elephant attack spread in the village, hundreds of villagers gathered near the dead body of the woman. The angry villagers were not allowing the forest department team to conduct the post-mortem of the dead body.

The villagers allege that this incident happened due to the negligence of the forest department.

Tapeshwar Mehta of the village told that such incidents keep happening every day in rural areas.

Sunil Kumar, Forester of Kujju Range, who reached the spot, said that the department had received information that an elephant had killed a woman and they reached the spot. The process of compensation to be done by the Forest Department will be completed soon.
