Jharkhand crisis: All MLAs meet to discuss political events of last few days, reach conclusion, says state Congress in-charge

Meanwhile, Congress has called a meeting of its party’s MLAs at 8.30 pm on Saturday night. Congress insiders, a key ally in the JMM-led coalition government, had earlier said that ring fencing of MLAs by parking them at a resort in a “friendly state” like West Bengal, Bihar or Chhattisgarh is being considered as one of the reasons for this. The development came after a marathon third round meeting between the ruling coalition legislators at the chief minister’s residence to chalk out a strategy to deal with the emerging scenario. The MLAs attended the meeting with their belongings.

Raj Bhavan sources said Governor Ramesh Bais is likely to send an order disqualifying Soren as an MLA to the Election Commission of India on Saturday. The Election Commission had on August 25 sent its opinion to Bais on a petition seeking disqualification of Soren as an MLA for violating election norms by extending a mining lease.

Jharkhand Rural Development and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Alamgir Alam had said on Friday that the coalition MLAs cannot be hunted down and they will stay in Ranchi. Another minister, Mithilesh Thakur, claimed that the ruling coalition has a “magic number of 50 MLAs, which can go up to 56” while claiming that he had learned “resort politics” from the saffron party.

The petitioner BJP in the case has sought the disqualification of Soren for the violation of Section 9A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, which deals with disqualification for government contracts. The clause states that “a person shall be disqualified, and so long as he has, in the course of his trade or business, entered into a contract with the appropriate Government for the supply of goods or for the performance thereof.” any act done by that Government”.

The single largest party, JMM, has 30 MLAs, Congress 18 and RJD one. The main opposition BJP has 26 MLAs in the house. Coalition allies had claimed on Thursday that there was no threat to the government. The JMM had expressed confidence that Soren would remain the chief minister for the full term till 2024.
