Jharkhand crisis: Hemant Soren’s party and Congress MLAs meet Governor

The verdict is expected to be announced any day

Ranchi:

The leader of the ruling JMM-Congress alliance in Jharkhand meets Governor Ramesh Bais. Mr. Soren may face disqualification as MLA following BJP’s complaint regarding office of profit.

The Hemant Soren government in Jharkhand is in flux as the Election Commission reportedly recommended the disqualification of the chief minister to the governor.

Mr Soren is facing disqualification as an MLA after the BJP filed a petition alleging that he had violated election rules by giving himself a mining lease.

The BJP is also demanding mid-term polls on “moral grounds”, while JMM-Congress leaders are confident that their government will overcome the crisis as they have the numbers.

The Election Commission has completed the hearing and submitted its opinion to the Governor on Tuesday. It is learned that the announcement of the verdict is expected someday.

Earlier this week, several legislators of the ruling coalition were sent to Raipur to “ring-fence” possible poaching attempts by the BJP.

The JMM and the Congress fear that the BJP may take advantage of the crisis and try to grab their MLAs and overthrow the elected government, as has happened in several states including Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka.

In the 81-member Assembly, the ruling coalition has 49 MLAs – the single largest party JMM has 30 MLAs, the Congress has 18 MLAs and the Rashtriya Janata Dal has one.

The main opposition BJP has 26 MLAs in the house.
