JNUSU says panel headed by retired HC judge should probe students’ struggle

The Jawaharlal Nehru Students’ Union (JNUSU) on Tuesday demanded that the university be directed by a retired High Court judge to investigate into the clash between two groups of students on April 10 over the alleged serving of non-vegetarian food at the mess. Panel should be formed. Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Officials have claimed that the violence took place when some students objected to the ‘havan’ on Ram Navami, a statement also made by the RSS-affiliated ABVP.

JNUSU also asked the university to withdraw its statement issued on April 11, in which it had said that the clash took place after some students objected to the havan. At least 20 students were injured.

A delegation of the students union also tried to meet JNU Vice Chancellor Shantisree Dhulipudi Pandit on Tuesday but it could not happen. Union members told that the security guards asked the students to submit a letter seeking an appointment with the VC.

The union noted that the violence in Kaveri hostel started with an arbitrary demand by a group of students to ban non-vegetarian food in the hostel mess, and added that this was confirmed by the concerned hostel as well as the mess committee members. Has been. ,

“However, the same students who raised this demand and violently disrupted the functioning of the mess, and who are also associated with ABVP, have resorted to spreading the narrative of dissolution of ‘havan’ in the hostel premises, a claim which There is neither support by the hostel or the mess committee,” the student union said in a statement.

“The committee should call upon to collect all evidence and evidence, meet the aggrieved parties and release the reports and recommendations to the public in a time bound manner. It is increasingly observed that the practice of politically motivated violence on campus is becoming a norm rather than an exception,” the JNUSU statement said.

The union said that the JNU administration should be ready to act as per the rules and ordinances of the university to maintain peace in the campus. “Moreover, the JNU administration should hold talks with all stakeholders, including elected representatives of the student and teacher community, to resolve the issue,” he added.

All India Students’ Union (AISA) national president N Sai Balaji said that he too had come to the vice-chancellor’s office at 2 pm but there was no one to meet him. “VCs always say that they are ready for talks. The VCs who solve the problems of the students are missing in action.”

Balaji said he wanted an independent judicial inquiry into the violence by the ABVP. “The administration has completely failed in its effort to stop the violence. Even in past incidents, the culprits of ABVP were always saved. Yesterday, the JNU administration issued two notes – one for internal consumption (students) and the other for external (public). “The note was nothing but a replica of ABVP’s press release. We demand the administration to withdraw the press release, bring out the facts and take action against the students of ABVP.

Meanwhile, the meat vendor of JNU mess has said that some students called him and said that chicken should not be supplied to the Cauvery hostel mess on Ram Navami, claimed Afzal Ahmed, who has been delivering meat to it for almost three decades. are.
