White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said on Monday that US President Joe Biden looks forward to speaking with Britain’s next prime minister Rishi Sunak in the coming days.
Jean-Pierre said that the protocol called for the US president to wait to be congratulated until an incoming British prime minister met the British monarch and was formally invited to form a new government.
“But President Biden looks forward to speaking with Minister Sunak in the coming days,” Jean-Pierre said, underscoring Washington’s commitment to continue close cooperation with Britain.
