Journey from 15,000 feet to 14 km polling station booth: Elections still a tough task in Himachal

It promises to be the most exciting election battle in the hills in recent times. BJP has entered the fray from many rallies of PM Narendra Modi. Arvind Kejriwal’s AAP had a strong start, but lately it has focused most of its attention on Gujarat. The Congress campaign rests on the shoulders of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, but the pace is yet to pick up. News18 Himachal Pradesh visits the state to assess public sentiments and political strategies ahead of the 2022 elections.

From the deployment of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) at an altitude of more than 15,000 feet, 93 voters have to cover a distance of 14 km to reach their nearest polling station – polling in the hill state of Himachal Pradesh. Vote on 12 Novemberis a difficult task.

At an altitude of 15,256 feet, Tashigam will be the highest polling station in the Lahaul-Spiti section, while Dhusra in the Chintpurni section in Una is the lowest at 300 feet. There are a total of 65 polling stations at an altitude of 10,000-12,000 feet. , while 20 are above 12,000 feet.

Himachal’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Manish Garg said, “93 voters will have to travel 14 km to reach the polling booth at Chhasag Bhatauri in Bharmour block of Chamba district.”

Of the 55,74,793 lakh voters in the state, 27,80,203 are males and 27,27,016 are females. The total number of voters in the 2017 elections was 50,25,941.

A total of 1.20 lakh voters are above 80 years of age, of which 1,181 persons are above 100 years of age. The number of service voters in the state is 67,532. A total of 142 polling stations will be managed entirely by women and 37 by persons with disabilities.

most voters in State Kangra has Sulah (1,04,486) in assembly constituency and the lowest is in Lahaul Spiti (14,468), which is the largest by area.

In Dharamsala assembly constituency, Siddhbari polling station has the highest number of 1,494 voters, while the lowest 16 voters are in Kinnaur’s Ka.

“This time the expenditure limit for a candidate has been increased from Rs 28 lakh to Rs 40 lakh.

Garg revealed that there are a total of 7,881 polling stations as compared to 7,525 in 2017, which is an increase of 4.73%. Only eight per cent polling stations are located in urban areas.
