Junior Men’s Hockey World Cup 2021: South Africa, Pakistan, Poland, Korea won the classification match

South Africa overcame a steadfast Canadian resistance at the FIH Odisha Hockey Men’s Junior Hockey World Cup here on Tuesday, while Pakistan thrashed the United States in the 9-16 places classification matches. The Koreans broke Egypt’s hearts in a shoot-out before Chile scored a goal by Poland in the final minute of the match, before Korea and Egypt registered a thrilling 3–3 draw.

South Africa beat Canada 7-3 on a day of agony and joy. For the first 15 minutes, Canada and South Africa defended strongly and both sides had little opportunity to break the deadlock.

The breakthrough came in the 16th minute when Player of the Match Cameron Le Forestier scored the first hat-trick of the goal. All three of his strikes came courtesy of some quick build-up play by the African team, and the striker was on hand to send the ball past Jackary Combs in Canada’s goal.

After that opening goal, it was still a similar match in which Canada fought hard to get back on terms but Idris Abdullah’s second goal in the 26th minute and then a penalty stroke by captain Guy Morgan gave Canada their first win. effectively ended the expectations. He scored three goals in a flurry of activity in the final quarter, but by then South Africa had scored four more goals, including a second for Morgan, and it was too late for Indy Shambi’s team.

The result means that South Africa will take on Pakistan in the next match as they are ranked 9-12. Canada will play continental neighbors USA as they seek their first win of the tournament.

Pakistan was too strong for the United States as they pushed aside their rivals during an 18–2 victory.

Pakistan smoothly moved into top gear, with players from the United States giving the attackers too much space and seemed unable to find their own structure for the most part of the game. That said, USA never stopped trying to find their own groove, and Finlay Quail was able to make the most of the two penalty corner opportunities. This was small compensation for the fact that most of the match was dominated by Pakistan.

The match started evenly, with the United States creating their chances but when Abuzar scored in the 14th minute, the Pakistan team reached a new level of pace, pace and ingenuity. Six goals in the second half put the game beyond doubt, but still, the Pakistan team marched ahead, finding every avenue to attack. Captain Abdul Rana scored four goals and received the player of the match award and was joined in the score sheet by 11 of his teammates. After the team’s failure in pool matches, Pakistan’s head coach Danish Kaleem was looking for answers and in this game, his players got the answers.

Poland beat Chile 2-1. Chile’s heart was broken by Tomas Bembenek’s last-minute goal as the forward scored a winner for Poland in the final minute of the game. Daniel Berogi gave Chile the lead from a penalty corner in the first quarter, before Julian Blaskiewicz equalized Poland.

From that moment the game was played at a brisk pace as both the teams felt that victory was within their grasp. However, it was Bembeneck’s quiet accuracy that proved the difference and saw Poland advance to 9-12 in the next match. The result means that Poland will now play Korea in a battle for ninth place, while Chile will take on Egypt.

Korea made the grade after a 3–3 draw with a 6–5 shoot-out win. Egypt goalkeeper Mahmoud Saleem can take comfort in the fact that he has enjoyed an excellent tournament, even though his team is yet to register a win. While Egypt has scored 31 goals so far, with Korea scoring three on Tuesday, Salim has made some notable saves during this match, including saving from a penalty strike. The teams were evenly matched in the opening quarter but Korea began to gain momentum as the game developed.
