Just a happy pic straight from Leh to brighten up your Tuesday

A little girl and her grandmother fill water bottles in Umla, Leh.

A little girl and her grandmother smile as they fill their bottles with tap water in a remote village in Leh, where the temperature often drops below zero degrees. This happy picture is being shared a lot on social media. The picture was taken in Umla – a village where residents previously had to travel long distances to get clean water. Today, however, Umla is one of 12 out of 60 villages in Ladakh’s Leh district where every household has assured supply of tap water even in sub-zero temperatures.

Bharat Lal, additional secretary and mission director of Jal Jeevan Mission, shared the picture on Twitter on Monday, from where it has garnered thousands of ‘likes’ and comments.

Sharing the photo, he wrote, “Jal Jeevan Mission is changing life: One of the 12 villages in Leh district of Ladakh, where now every household has assured tap water supply even in less than zero temperature. ” “The real satisfaction is the happiness on the faces of this little girl and her grandmother,” Lal said.

There is no proper road connectivity to the remote village Umla. According to a tweet by the official account of Jal Jeevan Mission, the local administration airlifted construction material to parts of Leh to ensure supply of tap water.

Last month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had dubbed the Jal Jeevan Mission a “village driven” and “women driven” movement.

PM Modi, while interacting with village panchayats and water committees or village water and sanitation committees, had said, “It is a village-driven and women-driven movement. Its main base is mass movement and public participation.”
