Chikkamagaluru: Villagers of Ichluhol carried a sick 72-year-old woman on their shoulders for 4 km before she was taken in a private vehicle and taken to hospital. Kalasa In Chikkamagaluru district after roads were damaged due to heavy rains on Tuesday.
Kalasa Wildlife Sanctuary consists of Ichluhol and Kalakodu settlements with 20 houses. These traditional forest dwellers are not inclined to migrate outside the forest area.
The distance between Ichluhol and Kalasa is about 50 km. People travel at least 20 km inside the sanctuary to come to any city. The settlements are connected to the nearest cities by an earthen road which was recently damaged by rain.
Laxmi, who was suffering from age-related ailments, fell ill at her home in Aichaluhol on Tuesday. Her grandson Mahesh asked the neighbors to help shift her to the hospital. With the road damaged for 4 km, the villagers carried him on their shoulders to the motorable area, from where he was taken to Kalasa Hospital in a private vehicle.
With a video of the incident going viral, people blamed the government and the district administration for failing to provide basic facilities. Villagers told that the forest department is opposing the construction of the road inside the protected area.
Chikkamagaluru Deputy Commissioner KN Ramesh told TOI that he has directed the officials to look into the demand of the villagers for a proper road.
He said that it seems that the forest department has not given permission to repair the road. “We will solve this issue by using funds from National Rural Employment Guarantee Program
