Kalka-Shimla highway damaged: Traffic disrupted, restoration underway

Amid heavy rain and cloudburst in the state, a major part of Shimla Kalka Highway flyover in Himachal Pradesh’s Solan district collapsed, disrupting traffic.

No casualties have been reported so far, though two vehicles collided when the flyover collapsed.

The Kalka Shimla National Highway 5 flyover is joined by a four-way tunnel which has been closed for traffic for the time being. Restoration is being done.

ANI today tweeted pictures of the damaged highway, where a major portion of the Shimla-Kalka Highway flyover was seen with vehicles on the banks of a submerged sinkhole.

Taking cognizance of the matter, Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur said, “There has been heavy rain in the country. Himachal since last night. All the Deputy Commissioners have been put on alert to report the damage. There has been damage to infrastructure in Kullu and Mandi areas.”

Heavy rains wreaked havoc in parts of Himachal Pradesh on Thursday, with two people buried alive in debris following landslides in Kullu district, while shops and vehicles were washed away and highways were blocked by floods at other places.

Earlier on Thursday, in Kullu, Chavelu Devi (55) and Kritika (17) were killed after a landslide at their house in Khadel of Ani subdivision, said Sudesh Mokhta, director of the State Disaster Management Department. were hit by debris.

He said that in another incident in the district, 10 shops and three vehicles were washed away due to cloudburst at Deuthi gram panchayat of Ani tehsil at around 7.30 am.

The national highway from Mandi to Kullu was also blocked after a landslide near Pandoh in the morning. Traffic has been diverted from Kataula.
