Kapalbhati: All you need to know about doing it right

Kapalbhati is a very important breathing technique that helps in improving metabolism, heart health, memory and concentration power. It also helps in flushing out toxins from the body. Although it is a fairly common exercise for yoga practitioners, many people consider it wrong or practice it in the wrong way.

In a recent Facebook Live with News18, Yoga Instructor Savita Yadav shared some tips for better results of Kapalbhati and precautions to be taken by those who practice this exercise regularly at home.

Kapalbhati increases blood circulation, which also helps in keeping heart related problems away. However, some precautions have to be taken into account. Don’t do this exercise if you’re a heart patient, have weak lungs or have chronic stomach problems, suggests Yadav. People suffering from the problem of hyperacidity should also not do it.

The right way to practice Kapalbhati

Sit on a mat and make a meditative posture. Keep your eyes closed and focus on your breathing. Breathe in and out rhythmically while chanting Om.

Take a deep breath and exhale forcefully. Try not to pay attention to whether your stomach is going in or out, it should happen on its own. You can follow the exercise shown in this video.

Continue the process of breathing for one minute. Keep in mind that do it only to the best of your ability without forcing yourself. Breathe in the air, hold it for a minute and then exhale as you relax. It will help you to strengthen your stomach and avoid problems related to metabolism and digestive system.

This exercise can also help you reduce belly fat. It involves the use of vigorous breathing which also strengthens the lungs and increases their capacity.
