Karnataka Assembly Elections: Ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in Karnataka, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the poll-bound state as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is leaving no stone unturned to retain power in the southern state.

Addressing a rally in Belagavi on Thursday, March 16, the chief minister of Assam said he wanted to shut down “all madrassas” as he wanted schools and universities in a “new India”. He said, “People from Bangladesh come to Assam and create a threat to our civilization and culture. I have closed 600 madrassas and I intend to close all madrassas because we don’t want madrassas. We want schools, want colleges and universities.”

In order to establish a secular education system, the Assam government resolved to close all government madrassas in 2020 and convert them into general educational institutions. The state assembly then passed the Assam Repeal Act, 2020 and the governor signed it into law on January 27, 2021.
