The controversial anti-conversion bill was cleared by the Karnataka cabinet on Monday and is likely to be introduced in the assembly on December 21, official sources said.

Official sources aware of the developments told news agency Press Trust of India, “The cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai today has approved the proposed anti-conversion bill, which is likely to be introduced in the assembly tomorrow.”

No official information was given on the decisions of the cabinet meeting as the winter session of the state legislature is underway.

The proposed bill, which is being opposed by opposition parties and Christian community leaders, is said to have penal provisions, and may also insist that those who want to convert to another religion must months before let’s file an application before the Deputy Commissioner.

Leader of Opposition Siddaramaiah has already said that the Congress party will not allow the BJP government to pass the anti-conversion bill in the assembly and the JD(S) has also said that it opposes the bill.

With protests from both the opposition parties, it remains to be seen how the bill is passed in the Legislative Council, where the ruling BJP does not have a majority.
