Protests against the hijab ban had spread across the country, with Muslim girls and women seeking permission from the Supreme Court to wear their headscarves in classrooms. The state government’s strict enforcement of uniforms has led to several protests.

On February 3, 28 girl students wearing hijab were stopped from entering the Government PU College campus in Kundapura. Hindu students had apparently come in saffron scarves the previous day, and minister BC Nagesh informed the college that students could only come to classes in uniform and that neither hijabs nor saffron scarves would be allowed.
