Karnataka Election Results 2023: Congress claims biggest vote share in 34 years

Congress has won the Karnataka Assembly Elections 2023 with the largest vote share and seats after a period of 34 years. Political activist Yogendra Yadav said the election was the biggest victory for “any party in Karnataka” since 1989 during Virendra Patil’s rule, when the Congress won 178 seats with a vote share of 43.76 percent. The party had claimed 136 seats at the halfway point. A mark of 113, according to Election Commission data.

In 1999, the Congress won 132 seats with 40.84 per cent vote share, followed by 122 seats in 2013 with 36.6 per cent vote share, according to data posted by Yadav on Twitter.

In 1994, JDS won a total of 115 seats with a vote share of 33.54. The BJP won 110 seats in 2008 with a vote share of 36.86 percent, followed by 104 seats in 2018 with a vote share of 36.3 percent. In 2004, the BJP got a total of 79 seats with a vote share of 28.33 per cent.

At the same time, BJP had won 56 seats and was ahead in eight seats. JD(S) has won 18 seats and is leading in two seats.

Soon after the BJP accepted defeat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Congress party for its victory in the Karnataka Assembly elections and wished the party the best in its endeavor to fulfill the aspirations of the people.

“Congratulations on the victory of the Congress party in the Karnataka Assembly elections. My best wishes for fulfilling the aspirations of the people.” PM Narendra Modi tweeted and said.

Karnataka erupted in celebration after the mandate as Congress workers raised slogans in favor of state party president DK Shivakumar as Shivakumar, Siddaramaiah and other party leaders arrived at the headquarters in Bengaluru.

“Karnataka has created history. Karnataka has shown a new life to democracy not only for the people of Karnataka but for the whole country. It is a victory for every Kannadiga,” said AICC in-charge of Karnataka Randeep Singh Surjewala.

Elections were held in the southern state on May 10 and the polling percentage was 72.68 per cent. The election was seen as a crucial test for both the parties ahead of the 2024 parliamentary elections.
