The fight for the Kanakapura assembly seat just got more interesting: Congress has pitted the ‘DK brothers’ against Karnataka Revenue Minister R Ashoka. State Congress chief DK Shivakumar and his brother DK Suresh are both contesting from the seat in the elections to be held on May 10.

In a surprise move, the Congress decided to field Bengaluru Rural MP Suresh as an independent candidate from Kanakapura. Commenting on the decision, Ashok called the grand old party “confused”. The BJP leader said fielding Suresh has left the Congress confused as to who should contest against him and scared of the final result.

Ashok, who is himself contesting from two seats – Padmanabhanagar, which he represents, and Kanakapura – called Suresh’s nomination a “security policy” in case brother Shivakumar’s nomination is declared invalid after scrutiny.

A Congress leader aware of the development said it was a “precautionary step” as there are several cases pending against Shivakumar. Therefore, the Congress leadership felt it was best to have a backup plan, the leader said.

“The BJP government can do anything to stop the Congress juggernaut and hence it is best to be safe rather than sorry,” said the leader on condition of anonymity.

But Ashok said Shivakumar has some “heavier stuff” to deal with. “Shivkumar fears that he has acquired hundreds of properties in his name. The more money, the more problems. Their luggage is very heavy and hence they are on sticky ground.

The BJP leader further said that this time the wind was in favor of the saffron camp in Kanakapura. He claimed that Shivakumar’s constituents were unhappy with him as he had not done much for them.

But as the BJP and the Congress gear up for a fierce battle on this assembly seat, which Shivakumar won thrice thrice, Ashok is quick to make a Bollywood-style remark: “I have Modi ji, Amit Shah ji hai; DK Shivkumar ji has DK Suresh, car but I have Modi and this will be the reason for victory.

“I request the people of Kanakapura and ask them – ‘Do they want a Modi and Ashoka government in Kanakapura or a Rahul Gandhi And the Shivkumar government?”, he said.
