Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said that a special scheme would be developed to utilize the experience of senior citizens in government projects, wherever necessary.

Speaking after inaugurating the World Senior Citizens Day event organized by the Department of Senior Citizens’ Empowerment at Ravindra Kalakshetra here on Saturday, he said the suggestions and guidance of senior citizens would be taken for the creation of the state.

Mr Bommai said that the pension for disabled and senior citizens was increased after he became the Chief Minister. Persons above 60 years of age are subjected to health check-up twice a year and the cost of treatment in case of health related problems will be borne by the government. Free eye check-up is done in the state.

“For people who are above 60 years of age, free medical tests are conducted twice a year. In case of any medical problem, the state government bears the cost of treatment,” the chief minister said. He said that the facility of free eye test and free spectacles would be provided to the senior citizens. The state government has reserved ₹500 crore for providing medical aid to senior citizens with hearing impairment. He said that dialysis and chemotherapy facilities have been increased and 12 new cancer centers will be opened soon.

Shri Bommai lamented the increasing number of old age homes in the state. “It is very unfortunate that family values ​​are deteriorating. It is a worrying trend for families to send their elder members to old age homes. People should give importance to human relations,” he said.
