The school has an omni, and headmaster Narayan Devadiga, the only permanent staff member, becomes the driver before and after classes. He goes to pick up and drop off 35 students in each house. He told STOI, “I am only continuing what my predecessor did. The alumni of the school donated a car a few years back and the then headmaster, Venkatesh used to pick up and drop the kids. I had to attend this school in January. Was transferred and has continued,” he told STOI. ,
He said that parents do not want their children to walk even a kilometer. He said: “Private schools provide a bus or van for their students. The school is located in a remote village surrounded by dense forests. and it is not safe for children to travel long distances alone.”
The school has two other part-time female teachers and since it can be challenging for them to drive every day and visit all the houses, the headmaster has taken up the responsibility. He drives around 25 kms daily and the alumni contribute in managing fuel expenses.
The school is gaining attention after using cycle tyres innovatively. Geeta Hegde, a teacher who was recently shifted to another school nearby, ensured that the 2.5-acre school looked vibrant. In collaboration with the School Development and Betterment Committee, parents and students, he collected around 100 old bicycle tires and creatively put the students to paint them blue, red and yellow.
Devadiga said, “The students spent about two months on this project. Geeta Hegde is known for organizing exhibitions and giving students a chance to use their talents. It is also an effort to popularize cycling among students. ”
