Mysore: After good pre-monsoon rains, malnad Areas of Mysore region are witnessing deficient rainfall, which has affected agriculture. More than 50 percent rainfall deficit has been recorded in these areas.
Southwest monsoon covers all Karnataka until June 16. According to a report by the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Center (KSNDMC), between June 1 and 25, Shivamogga recorded a rainfall deficit of 68%, Kodagu 68%, Chikkamagaluru 47% and Hassan 7%. Core Malnad taluks such as Koppa, Tirthahalli, Hosanagar, Madikeri and Virajpet witnessed a rainfall deficit of 60%.
Channakeshav Gowda, a farmer, said, “We have not received good rains so far this monsoon, only light and moderate rains. Though so far it has not affected the sowing of crops, we are worried about the days to come.” In Alur, Hassan.
According to officials of the Karnataka State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA), the monsoon is weak so far in both the coastal and Malnad areas. A senior official has confirmed the weakening of monsoon. Generally, 30% of the rainfall is recorded in June. But this year it is weak. Since water started flowing into the dams in May due to ample pre-monsoon rains, the reservoirs are in good standing.
Karnataka State Raitha Sangha President Badgalapur Nagendra said the sowing of the crop was good due to good pre-monsoon rains. But the weather has remained dry in all areas of Malnad for the last few days.
