Belagavi: Police have arrested 10 people, including seven members of a right-wing outfit, who in September took a betel nut of Rs 5 lakh to eliminate a youth for allegedly having an affair with a girl from another community.
The contract was given by the girl’s parents, who were allegedly in a relationship with a used car dealer Arbaazi Mullah. The main accused is from Shri Ram Sena Hindustan and all 10 have been charged with murder, conspiracy and destruction of evidence. Those arrested included the girl’s parents and a mediator who tried to bring peace between the two sides.

Belagavi Superintendent of Police Laxman Nimbargi Pundalika alias Maharaja Nagappa told reporters here on Friday that mutagekarThe 39-year-old took the contract to kill Arbaaz and the rest were involved in the murder. The police produced all the accused in the local court.
Sources close to the probe said that Mutagekara sealed the betel nut deal for Rs 5 lakh and the girl’s parents paid her Rs 60,000 in advance. Sources said 36-year-old Qutbuddin Allahbaksh Bepari, who was mediating between the victim and the organisation, allegedly brought Arbaaz to the railway track in Khanapur in Belagavi district on September 28, claiming that they could strike a deal. The other accused were waiting with weapons, they attacked him and killed him as soon as he reached the designated spot. At least five of the 10 accused, including Mutagekara, were present at the scene. Later, the victim’s torso and legs were amputated and the body was dumped on a railway track in Khanapur to make it a case of a railway accident.

The victim is said to have paid the money in two instalments: Rs 7,000 through online cash transfer on September 26, and Rs 75,000 on the day of the murder. He arranged for cash by selling his car. Arbaaz’s mother was in Goa at the time of the incident.
Under the betel nut deal, the girl’s parents Sushila, 42, and Erappa Basavanne Kumbara, 54, would commit murder and surrender to the police, keeping Mutagekara away from the picture, police said. As planned, the parents arrived at the police station soon after the murder, with a request that they be arrested.
The police surmised that the couple could not have carried out the murder without outside help and started investigating the matter. At the same time, the victim’s mother cast doubt on the role of Mutagekara, giving rise to the police theory that more people were involved in the conspiracy.
Other accused arrested are Maruti Prahlad Sugate, 30, Manjunath Tukaram, 25, Ganapati Dnyaneshwar Sugate, 26, Prashant Kalappa Patil, 28, Praveen Shankar Pujari, 28, and Sridhar Mahadev, 31.
