Karnataka: White tigress reaches Pilikula zoo Mangaluru News – Times of India

MANGALURU: Pilikula Zoo in Mangaluru has received a female white tiger – Kaveri and a female ostrich – from Arignar Anna Zoological Park in Chennai as part of animal exchange programme.
HJ Bhandari, Director, Pilikula Biological ParkSaid that Kaveri is the first white tigress in the zoo and another male tiger is expected to join her soon. The Kaveri and the Ostrich will be kept in quarantine for at least a week, till they adapt to the local conditions. The public can get a glimpse of him from next week. There are about a thousand animals, reptiles and birds in the zoo and most of the species are breeding.
Pilikula Zoo is releasing a male Bengal tiger-Sanjay, four dholes and some snake species in Chennai. Presently there are 11 Bengal tigers in Pilikula out of which seven are males and two are male ostriches.
He said that efforts are on to procure varieties of Asiatic lion, Indian wolf, white buck, sloth bear, hog deer, Nilgai and rare birds from Rajkot zoo, Gujarat, Gorewada zoo. Maharashtra And Nandankanan Zoo of Odisha. Surplus animals at Pilikula Zoo will be sent to other zoos under the Animal Exchange Programme. The respective zoos are mutually agreed and are awaiting consent from Central Zoo Authority, New Delhi for exchange.
The animal exchange program during the last two years has been delayed due to the pandemic. Currently, extreme weather conditions, especially in the north Indian states, are delaying the exchange of animals. At Pilikula Zoo, all measures have been taken to protect the animals from the heat. Bhandari said that all enclosures have been provided with water sprinklers and fresh water is provided daily.
