What is Sargi? Know its relevance

Women begin the day with a short morning prayer, usually followed by sargi, which is considered synonymous with the festival as it highlights the deep love and respect in Indian families. It is actually a pre-dawn traditional meal, a thali, or an assortment of various food items that married women receive from their mother-in-law on the day of Karva Chauth. It is also said that food provides enough energy for women to sustain themselves without food and water throughout the day.

There are not only traditional values associated with the food items that form a part of Sargi during Karva Chauth. It is also important that it provides women with enough energy to survive the whole day without food and water. Sharing sargi with friends and relatives is also considered a good omen.

Karva Chauth 2022: What to keep in Sargi Thali?

Sargi includes not only food items but also ’16 Shringar’ items which are presented by the mother-in-law or sister-in-law of the fasting woman.

Speaking of sargi thali, it usually contains seven, nine or 11 types of bite-sized foods. If you are observing Karva Chauth fast or sending sargi to your daughter-in-law this year, make sure your sargi thali includes these things to make it happen:

fresh fruit

Fresh fruits contain ample amount of fiber and water. Since this fast involves abstaining from food and water, eating fresh fruits will make women feel full and their body’s water needs will also be met. Consume citrus fruits like pomegranates, oranges, pineapples so that you do not feel thirsty during the day as citrus fruits have a high water content and can help fill the lack of hydration throughout the day. Plus, since fiber takes time to digest, it will keep you from feeling hungry.

sweet

Some sweets are placed in the plate which lifts your spirits and completes the fast positively. Therefore, sweets must be kept in the sargi thali. Plus, since they’re rich in glucose and sucrose, a dessert or two will give you the energy you need to go through the day without feeling tired.

nuts

The dry fruits including cashews, almonds, raisins and pistachios in the sargi thali will provide you with all the essential nutrients that will keep you active throughout the day.

lightly cooked food

Simple homemade food that is easy to digest can also be a part of sargi. A couple of rotis, a simple vegetable and pudding will be enough to provide enough energy for the day.

coconut water

Coconut water is a detox for this day, as it will not only keep you hydrated during the ‘Nirjala’ fast but will also keep your electrolytes balance in check.

While the festival preparations are in full swing, don’t forget to add these healthy food options from our list to your sargi thali.
