Kenya, Zimbabwe suspended by FIFA

Kenya and Zimbabwe are the latest African football federations to be suspended by FIFA as world football’s governing body continues its crackdown on government interference.

The associations of the two countries were dissolved by their respective governments last year, but they were suspended from all international football activities following a decision by FIFA’s council on Thursday.

Kenya’s sports ministry dissolved its football federation in November after KFF president Nick Mwendwa was accused of multiple counts of fraud. He has since resigned as the president of the federation.

This month, four members, including Zimbabwe Football Association president Felton Kamambo, appeared in court in Harare on charges of fraud.

The ZIFA’s executive committee was ordered to be dissolved last November by the country’s Sports and Recreation Commission, a government-appointed body, amid allegations that the association was given by the state for Zimbabwe’s participation in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations final. Money was misused.

“Without prejudice to any investigation by national authorities or other judicial bodies, the FIFA Council decided to suspend the Football Kenya Federation and the Zimbabwe Football Association with immediate effect for undue interference from third parties,” FIFA said.
