Kenyan world record holder Agnes Tirope found dead after being allegedly stabbed – World Latest News Headlines

Tyrop was found dead after “allegedly stabbed” at his home in Itten, according to the country’s athletics body.

Local reports said that Tirope was found dead with a stab wound in the stomach.

Athletics Kenya said it was “still working to find out more about his passing.”

Tirop’s agent – Gianni Demadonna – also confirmed his passing to CNN by e-mail.

Athletics Kenya was not immediately available for further comment when contacted by CNN.

The 25-year-old won bronze medals in the 10,000m at the 2017 and 2019 World Championships and finished fourth in the 5,000m at the Tokyo Games.

Last month, Tirop made history at the Adizero Road To Records event in Germany by clocking 28 seconds from the world record for the 10km long race.

Tirope finished in a time of 30:01, breaking the previous record of 30:29, which was set by Moroccan Asmai Leghazoui in 2002.

After the race, she said: “I am very happy to have broken the world record. I thought the pace was good. The course was great too.”

At the 2015 IAAF World Cross Country Championships, Tirope became the second youngest gold medalist in the women’s race after Zola Budd.

Athletics Kenya said the country has “lost a jewel thanks to its stellar performance, which was one of the fastest growing athletics giants on the international stage.”

Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta also paid tribute in a statement, saying: “It is disturbing, extremely unfortunate and very sad that we have lost a young and promising athlete who has done so much for our country at the young age of 25. This year she achieved glory through her exploits on the global athletics stage including the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where she was part of the Kenyan team in Japan.”
