Kerala class 11 exam: Supreme Court allows state government to conduct offline exams

The Supreme Court today dismissed a petition challenging the Kerala government’s decision to conduct offline examinations for class 11 students.

A bench of Justices AM Khanwilkar and CT Ravikumar said a detailed affidavit has been filed and they are taking all measures related to the coronavirus protocol.

“The third wave is not stopping immediately”

“We are convinced by the clarification given by the state and the trust authorities will take all precautions and necessary steps so that the students appearing for the proposed examination and underage do not face any untoward situation,” the bench said.

The top court said a holistic approach should be adopted in the matter and the officers are conscious of their duties.

The Supreme Court said that it had intervened on an earlier occasion as there was a possibility of a third wave of COVID-19 by this month.

“The third wave is not stopping immediately,” the bench said.

The Kerala government, in an affidavit to the top court, had told the apex court that online examination would be detrimental to students who do not have access to laptops and mobile phones.

“Conducting exams through online mode will affect a large number of students who do not have access to laptops, desktops or even mobile phones. Students from the lower strata of the society depend on mobile phones or tablets to attend online classes.

The state government had told the court, “There is no internet connection or mobile data available in many areas. These students will never be able to write the online exam.”

Earlier, the apex court had on September 3 stayed the Kerala government’s decision to conduct offline examinations for class XI starting from September 6 for a week, observing that “there is an alarming situation in the state”. “.

The top court had said that “cases in Kerala account for about 70 per cent of the cases in the country and children of this age cannot be exposed to this risk”.
