Kerala CM asks Tamil Nadu to draw maximum water from Mullaperiyar dam as rains may intensify

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Sunday urged his Tamil Nadu counterpart MK Stalin to ensure that maximum amount of water is extracted from the Mullaperiyar dam as the reservoir level can reach 142 feet after torrential rains intensify. Vijayan, in a letter to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, said that at 4 pm the Mullaperiyar dam was at 2109 c/s and the discharge level was 1750 c/s.

“At present there is a net inflow of about 2,109 cusecs accumulated in the reservoir even after diversion from Tamil Nadu side. With the current flow, it is feared that the reservoir level may reach 142 feet if the torrential rains intensify. Therefore, there will be an urgent need to release water from Mullaperiyar dam to Tamil Nadu gradually through the tunnel,” Vijayan said in his letter.

Vijayan sought Stalin’s timely intervention in the matter and requested him to immediately direct the concerned authorities to ensure that maximum amount of water is drawn from the Mullaperiyar dam to the Vaigai dam through the tunnel and the water is diverted. Slowly let it down.

He requested the Kerala government to inform about the opening of the shutters at least 24 hours in advance so that precautionary measures can be taken to ensure the safety of the people living under the dam.

In the letter, Vijayan also pointed out that when the water level reached 133.45 feet on October 18, the Kerala state chief secretary and other officials held meetings to ensure the safety of the people.

Meanwhile, the NDRF has conducted awareness classes among the people living below the Mullaperiyar dam and on the banks of the Periyar river. As per the latest reports in the afternoon, the water level in Mullaperiyar was 136.85 feet.

Kerala was devastated by heavy rains during October 15 and 16, resulting in widespread damage to property and life in the south central districts.
