The Kerala government will re-open schools for classes 1 to 7 and classes 10 and 12 from November 1. It has issued several guidelines for this. All staff and teachers have been instructed to give both doses of the vaccine before the schools reopen. Drivers of vehicles used by schools to transport children should also be vaccinated.

State Health Minister Veena George has said that the classes will be organized in a bio-bubble system, which means that students in a class will be divided into batches. Only one batch will be allowed to attend physical classes and interact with each other at a given time. Schools are planning to keep students coming from the same region in the same batch. In this way their journey could also be decided together. There will be two or three bio bubbles in each class. Children in one bio bubble should at no point have close contact with another bio bubble. If someone tests Covid-19 positive in the bio bubble then the rest of the students will also go into quarantine.

Students have been instructed to allow them to return to schools after taking written permission from their parents. Classes will start between 9 am and 10 am and will be allowed till noon in the first two weeks. It will be divided into half batches and each will be allowed to attend schools two or three days a week. Up to two children can sit on a bench.

If a school has more than 1000 children, the classes should be arranged in such a way that only 25% of the children are on the campus at any given time. Children with any kind of co-morbidity or whose family members are COVID-19 positive have been instructed not to attend schools.

Rooms with good air circulation should be used for taking classes and only fans should be used. If possible, schools can take classes in the open air. Depending on the situation in each school, mid-day meals can be provided in schools. Classes will have to be sanitized daily. Toilets have to be disinfected at regular intervals. Children have been advised to bring drinking water from their homes.

Remaining classes will start from November 15. The Kerala Chief Minister had earlier directed the state authorities to meet the necessary requirements for the reopening of schools at least 15 days in advance.
