Kerala govt allows menstrual, maternity leave in all state universities

State Higher Education Minister Dr R Bindu said that apart from menstrual leave, the government has given a maximum of 60 days maternity leave for all girl students who are 18 years and above.

The Kerala government on Thursday announced that menstrual and maternity leave will be allowed to all female students in all state universities. Issuing the order, State Higher Education Minister Dr. R. Bindu said that the government has provided maximum 60 days maternity leave to all girl students who are 18 years or above.

“Once again, Kerala sets a model for the country. Menstrual and maternity leave will be provided to girl students of all institutions under our Higher Education Department, reaffirming the LDF government’s commitment to realizing a gender just society,” tweeted Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

It comes after Cochin University of Science and technology (CUSAT) provided “menstrual benefits” to all female students. The university sanctioned an additional 2 per cent for shortfall in attendance of female students in each semester. The Kerala State Youth Commission later recommended the Department of Higher Education to grant menstrual leave to all universities in Kerala.

Each semester in CUSAT, Students need 75 percent attendance but after considering Menstrual leave, girl students can appear in the examination even if they have 73 percent attendance. The joint registrar said, “After considering the requests for the benefit of menstruating women students, the Vice-Chancellor ordered the sanction of an additional 2 per cent reduction in attendance of women students in each semester, subject to reporting to the Academic Council.” Is.” CUSAT said.

Menstruation benefit in CUSAT has been extended to all female students of the University including students pursuing Ph.D. The order was placed before the Academic Council for procedural approval. It was approved and implemented. Subsequently, the Kerala Technical University also implemented menstrual leave for girl students.

Minister R Bindu had said earlier Under the Higher Education Department, consideration is going on to implement menstrual leave in all the universities. Minister Bindu said that if it is implemented in all the universities then it will be helpful for the students. He further said that the SFI state leadership has given a representation in this regard.
