Thiruvananthapuram:

Kerala Police Chief Anil Kant on Monday felicitated female cop MR Ramya for breastfeeding a baby separated from her mother.

Civil Police Officer MR Ramya of Kozhikode Chevayur Police Station and his family were invited to the Police Headquarters and honored with letters of appreciation. The SHO said that this act of compassion in treating the innocent has enhanced the prestige of the police force.

Impressed by his service, High Court Judge Devan Ramachandran, who has seen his instincts to rescue a hungry child, also wrote a letter to the police chief appreciating his work. He was also presented a certificate from the judge by the police chief. The certificate mentions that she represents the best face of the police force.

On Saturday morning, the 22-year-old woman, the mother of the infant, lodged a complaint at the Chevayur police station that her child was missing. The girl was taken away from the mother due to a family dispute. On receiving information that the father may have gone to Bengaluru to accompany the child to work, the police stations at the Wayanad border were informed. The Sultan Bathery police, while checking the vehicles at the border, traced the father traveling with the child and took him into custody.

The police took the hungry and tired newborn to the hospital. The doctors found the baby’s sugar level to be low. When Ramya reached the hospital, she told the doctors that she was a lactating mother and fed the baby. And in the evening the baby was reunited with the mother.

Ms. Ramya is a native of Chingapuram, Kozhikode, who joined the police force four years ago. She had completed her training in the 2nd Batch of the Women’s Battalion and served in the 4th Squad of the Armed Police Battalion. She had joined Chevayur police station after maternity leave. Ramya, a mother of two, is the wife of schoolteacher Aswant Viswan VR.
