Police said the Kerala Police detained a customs officer after investigating gold smuggling from the Karipur International Airport here.

The superintendent ranking officer was taken into custody from outside the airport on Thursday while he was reportedly waiting for the two carriers, without knowing the fact that they had already been apprehended by the police.

320 grams of gold was recovered from him from the spot and later an amount of Rs 4,42,000 was recovered from his living room.

He said he did not reveal his official identity during his detention. The police came to know of his identity during a search of his room.

According to the police, the customs officer allegedly helped the carriers flying from Dubai to the airport in the early hours smuggle 320 grams of gold from the airport.
