KFDC is planning to open fish value addition unit

Karnataka Fisheries Development Corporation (KFDC) Managing Director Dinesh Kumar Kallar said here on Monday that the corporation plans to open a fish value addition unit in the city.

Speaking at the inaugural session of the three-day training on “Dry Fish Processing, Value Addition and Marketing” organized by the College of Fisheries for fishermen and women, he said that the corporation has taken up the issue of funds for opening with the government an announcement. As the unit was done in the budget of 2021-22. He said that now the proposed value addition unit is for fresh water and cultured tilapia fish.

He asked the entrepreneurs to utilize the 50 per cent subsidy given by the government for opening fish processing units.

The college’s dean Shivkumar Magada said the college plans to open an outlet selling fish and its value-added products on the college campus at Yekkur near National Highway 66.

Mr Magda asked the women and men to focus on maintaining cleanliness of fish and its products during value addition and marketing. He said that the entrepreneurs should have their own brand while doing marketing and asked to take advantage of the subsidy grant of the government for opening the units. “Entrepreneurs should also learn the business of marketing,” he said.

Kumara, Chief Executive Officer, Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat inaugurated the training programme. KFDC Chairman Nitin Kumar, B Manja Naik, Professor and Head (Thermal Processing), Department of Fish Processing Technology in the college and Sushmita Rao, Deputy Director, Department of Fisheries and others spoke.
