The health of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has long been a source of fascination for the tabloids and is a gift that keeps on giving according to the latest reports. In the recently released pictures by North Korean media, Kim is seen with an even slimmer figure to such an extent that she is unrecognizable. The Korean Central News Agency released photos taken at a party meeting. The Daily Mail reported that state officials discussed guiding the struggle “to guide the party and the people into the next phase of victory”. The country is grappling with an economic crisis due to pandemic lockdowns, natural disasters and sanctions on its nuclear weapons programme.
Officials stressed the dictator’s recovery, claiming that he is “eating less for the sake of the country” which is facing acute food shortages. Speculation about Kim’s health began in 2021, when he emerged after apparently losing 40lbs (about 20kg) of weight. Although civilians have been ravaged by starvation and systemic oppression, state TV declared that Kim’s “vulnerable” status is “breaking people’s hearts.”
In a report in The Guardian, observers noted that her weight loss may have been aimed at improving her “physique” and that no unusual examples were recorded in the North Korean video. Rumors of an illness also started floating around in November when a skinny Kim appeared in public after a month, her longest hiatus from the public eye in seven years.
North Korea was hit by heavy floods in 2020 that destroyed crops and displaced families. Frequent floods and droughts have resulted in greater crop destruction and subsequent depletion.
Her slimmer looks have been the focus of attention in South Korea, with media outlets publishing photos of her past and current appearances. Kim’s health matters in Seoul, Washington, Tokyo and other world capitals because he has not publicly anointed a successor who would control an advanced nuclear program targeting the United States and its allies – if he is disabled. North Korea, never open about the inner workings of its leadership, has tightened itself over the past year in its handling of the pandemic.
Known for heavy drinking and smoking, Kim comes from a family with a history of heart problems. Both his father and grandfather died of heart ailments. Experts have said that their weight can increase the chances of heart diseases.
