Hubli: Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences ,IMS, Hubli made his debut kidney transplant After getting approval from the state government on Wednesday, the hospital.
KIMS was recognized by the state government as a facility that can perform kidney transplant last month. Sources said that after waiting for several years and upgrading its infrastructure, KIMS got the nod.
In the absence of kidney transplant facility in KIMS, many patients are directed to go to Bangalore or other private hospitals for kidney transplant. KIMS is the second medical college in the state to do kidney transplant after Institute of Nephro Urology, Bengaluru. The government’s approval to KIMS has come as a boon for kidney patients from poor families in North Karnataka.
Dr. Venkatesh Mogar, Head nephrology The department, KIMS, told TOI that KIMS is equipped with twin OTs, specialists and other facilities. “After evaluating our infrastructure and other facilities, the government gave its approval for kidney transplant last month. Our team of doctors did the first kidney plantation two days back and the patient is recovering now.
“If a close relative of a patient is willing to donate one of his kidneys, we will do a kidney transplant in the hospital. If there are second class relatives, we will send such cases to the state level authority committee for approval. If it is a direct relative of the patient, we will do the transplant here after following the legal process to verify the documents and other details of the donors through the local authority committee set up at KIMS.”
He informed that 900-950 people undergo dialysis every month at KIMS and many are now waiting for donors.
Dr Ramalingappa Antaratani, Director, KIMS said, “After getting permission to do kidney transplant, we did the first procedure two days back. A man aged 20 to 25 underwent the transplant. His mother donated the kidney. Patients and donors are recovering. Since this is the first kidney transplant, we are not sharing much information about the patient and the donor. We will share all the details once they are ready for the holiday. ,
He said that patients who have BPL and Antyodaya cards can avail free treatment. It is also affordable to others, he said.
