King Charles and Princess Diana’s wedding cake to be auctioned soon

The wedding of King Charles and Princess Diana in 1981 created a lot of buzz around the world. Thousands of media, photographers and people from around the world gathered outside Buckingham Palace to watch the wedding. A recent ANI report states that a piece of the wedding cake of King Charles (then Prince Charles) and Princess Diana will soon go up for auction to the world. According to the New York Post, one of the guests at the wedding — Nigel Ricketts — had preserved a piece of cake (from the incident) for 41 years. Following his death last year (in 2021), the piece of cake is now set to be auctioned in the United Kingdom by Dorr & Rees Auctions.

The report further states that the cake’s “pre-sales estimate is 300 GBP which equates to over Rs 27,000 (as per the current conversion rate).” The cake is packaged in its original box and is expected to sell for more.

For those unaware, the wedding was attended by around 3000 guests and there were 23 official wedding cakes. Reports say that the piece appears to be from a centerpiece fruitcake, which had five layers and was five feet tall.

Along with the announcement of the auction, the Dorr & Rees website uploaded a hand-written note by Royal Staffer that read, “Diana and I are touched beyond words that you should have gone to so much trouble to find something so useful.” …and I can assure you that we’ll cherish it in the house it finally arrives!”

For the unversed, in 2014, a piece of the same cake was sold for GBP 1,375, which equates to over INR 1,27,000 (as per the current day’s conversion rate).
