Fourteen-year-old Bharat Subramaniam on Sunday became India’s 73rd Chess Grandmaster after meeting his third and final GM criteria at the Vargani Cup Open in Italy.

Subramaniam scored 6.5 points along with four others in nine rounds to finish seventh overall in the event. He achieved his third GM benchmark here and also touched the expected 2,500 (Elo) mark.

Specifically, to become a GM, a player must secure three GM criteria and pass a live rating of 2,500 Elo Points.

The All India Chess Federation (AICF) also congratulated Kishor on his feat.

Meanwhile, another Indian Grandmaster MR Lalit Babu also participated in the Vargani Cup Open and won the title in Italy on Sunday.

In the tournament, 9th seed Lalit scored seventh out of a possible 9, and tied for pole position with second seed GM Neiman Hans Moke of the United States, Vitaly Bernadsky of Ukraine and Nurgyul Salimova of Bulgaria.

But a better tie-break score helped Lalit finish as champions, while Moke finished as runner-up first. Ukraine’s top seed Anton Korobov finished fifth.
