While her medals arrived later in the afternoon, Komal Kohar of Maharishi Dayanand University won the gold medal by beating her rivals in the women’s weightlifting 45kg category with ease.

Kohar, a gold medalist at the Khelo India Youth Games 2020 and a silver medalist in the first edition of the University Games, not only improved the color of her medals but also created a new KIUG record in the process. The 20-year-old from Sonipat lifted a combined 160kg (snatch 70kg, clean and jerk 90kg) in the event.

At the shooting range, a tense qualification round saw Delhi University’s Partha Makhija, a Khelo India scholar, top with 628.6 points. However, in the final, Makhija was defeated 16-10 by Madineni Mahesh of KL University. Gajanan Khandagale of Savitribhai Phule University won the bronze medal.

Subsequently, Mahesh cites the scholarship, saying that she was just the motivation needed to strike gold. “It’s a really important achievement for me because my college really needed this win,” he said. “I deserved the scholarship to win the gold medal, so I worked hard for it and I am happy to have it today.”

Mahesh also credited the Khelo India platform for doing a lot for athletes and encouraging greater participation and driving growth. “Sponsorship under the Khelo India scheme is a much-needed requirement for the development of athletes, and it motivates us to perform at our best.”

Makhija modified the team event to win the gold medal as part of the Delhi University team. The trio of Shivansh Saini, Samarveer 628.4 and Makhija beat Savitribai Phule University for the gold with a total score of 1875.3.

It was also the first day of boxing, with 48 bouts in different weight categories. Vinka of Kurukshetra University highlighted Shaheen Gill of Desh Bhagat University at the start of the day to win as her opener in the 57-60kg category.

Khelo India Scholar and TOPS athlete Vinka won the gold medal in the 60kg category at the 2021 AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships.

Mallakhamb, who made his debut on Sunday, got his first medal. Mumbai University won the thrilling contest by a margin of 0.12 points, placing Savitribai Phule University in the second position. Bundelkhand University won the bronze medal.

The swimming events will begin tomorrow and all eyes will be on the host star attraction Olympian Srihari Nataraja. Srihari will get into action late in the evening in the 50m freestyle. Rujuta Khade of Shivaji University will also compete in the women’s 50m freestyle event.
