Kolkata: The NIA on Tuesday arrested a former managing director of a Jharkhand-based power and natural resources company from his Salt Lake residence for allegedly providing funds to a group separate from the CPI (Maoist).
Mahesh Agarwal He was arrested after a Jharkhand court rejected his “no coercive action” plea. A special NIA court on Wednesday sent him to four-day transit remand.
NIA counsel Debashish Mallick Chowdhury said, “There was a stay on the non-bailable warrant against him which was vacated on Tuesday.” NIA officers and Bidhananagar police reached his house at around 10.30 am on Tuesday. Sources said Agarwal tried to escape in a car with a Nagaland number plate, but was caught. Agarwal’s lawyer Ayan Bhattacharya claimed that he was falsely implicated and his name appeared only in the second supplementary charge sheet. He said that despite being found Covid positive on January 14, he was apprehended.
The case was first registered at Tandwa police station in Chatra, Jharkhand regarding payments made by corporate entities to Jharkhand-based extremist organization Tritiya Pratishna Samiti. The NIA learned that Agarwal paid Rs 200 per tonne of coal to the transporters and money was given to the TPC members to ensure smooth passage of the trucks. Agarwal allegedly helped TPC members raise funds. The agency also submitted emails which indicated that Agarwal was aware of the money being paid to TPC.
NIA counsel Shyamal Ghosh said, “Extortion, endangering life, concealment of stolen property sections under UAPA are imposed on Agarwal.”
