Mangaluru: The Don Bosco Hall, built in 1951 under Konkani drama meeting (kns), has received a major facelift after seven decades. The renovated hall was blessed and inaugurated on Thursday.
The hall is located in the heart of the city, and has been staging domestic Konkani plays every week for the past seven decades. It has nurtured the growth of many theater artists, musicians and others over a long period. The renovation began in February last year, and was completed within a year at a cost of Rs 1.5 crore. Hall officials have planned additional work, which will be taken up in the next phase depending on the availability of funds.
According to the Hall’s history, 52 cents of land was purchased for Don Bosco Hall for 30,000 rupees, and the foundation stone was laid on 19 September 1948, the fifth anniversary of the KNS. The KNS was officially inaugurated when its first play ‘Triumph in Trial’ by noted author MP D’Sa was staged on 19 September 1943 at the Academy Hall of St. Aloysius College.
Don Bosco Hall and Assisi Commercial Complex, Mangaluru, was inaugurated on August 19, 1951. The hall was then the most modern and largest in Mangaluru. Since then, KNS has supported many youths, playwrights, musicians and entertained many others. KNS has organized many social plays, historical plays, comedies, tragedies and religious plays. All local communities were allowed to use the hall for weddings and ceremonies for a reasonable fee.
Since 1964, KNS has been organizing competitions like singing, dancing, poetry, eloquence and many programs for the people of Mangaluru, to promote Konkani culture and language.
KNS PRO Raymond D’Cunha said the hall had a reasonable rent charge. The hall has received a major facelift with the help of donors and money from the hall.
