Dhaka: Bangladesh President Ramnath was welcomed on the red carpet on Wednesday Kovind Arriving here on his first three-day state visit, during which he will hold talks with his counterpart and participate in the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Bangladesh’s independence from Pakistan in 1971.

Several senior ministers along with civil and military officials were present at the airport to welcome Kovind – the only foreign head of state invited to attend the ceremony.
Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Arindam Bagchi termed President Kovind’s visit to Bangladesh as a “grand start”.

The Bangladesh Army, Navy and Air Force personnel offered him a guard of honor as part of a reception at the airport, from where he was escorted in a convoy to the National Memorial at Savar on the outskirts of the capital.
Army trumpeters played the final post as Bangladesh’s national flag was lowered and reappeared as part of a ceremony when President Kovind laid a wreath at the memorial in memory of Bangladesh’s nine-month-long 1971 Liberation War martyrs.

An official familiar with the ceremony said that “the Indian President also planted an ‘Ashoka’ sapling in the memorial garden and signed the visitors’ book, saying he was overjoyed to participate in the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Bangladesh’s independence.”
He said that President Kovind also paid heartfelt tributes to the martyrs of 1971. The war also claimed the lives of several Indian soldiers along with Bangladeshi freedom fighters and unarmed civilians including children and the elderly.
This is President Kovind’s first foreign visit since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. He will represent India as the special guest at the 50th Victory Day celebrations of Bangladesh here.
In a reflection of the close ties, India is also hosting a number of events to mark the 50th anniversary of the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, which led to the liberation of Bangladesh.
Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen on Tuesday described President Kovind’s visit as “ceremonial”, but stressed that all issues of bilateral ties are expected to be reviewed as part of his visit.
“President Kovind is scheduled to visit Bangladesh on December 15-17 at the invitation of Bangladesh President M Abdul Hamid, which is a unique gesture of good relations between the two neighboring countries,” he said.
Kovind is also scheduled to visit the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Memorial Museum in the capital’s Dhanmandi area to pay tribute to Bangladesh’s founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

On the second day of the visit, President Kovind will attend the National Parade Ground on December 16 as a “guest of honour” to mark the golden jubilee of Bangladesh’s Victory Day.
After a nine-month-long war, Pakistani troops surrendered unconditionally to the Indo-Bangladesh allied forces in Dhaka, marking the emergence as the independent capital of an independent country, although Bangladesh surrendered its independence on March 26, 1971. declared independence.

On the third day of the yatra, Kovind is expected to inaugurate and inspect the newly renovated section of the Kali temple at Ramana in the central part of the capital, officials said.
“He will leave Dhaka on the same day on the afternoon of December 17,” a foreign ministry spokesman said.
