KTR asks Center not to sell Telangana assets, writes to Sitharaman

Alleging that the NDA government is planning to sell assets worth around Rs 40,000 crore of the central government in Telangana, IT and Industries Minister KT Rama Rao has demanded the Center to withdraw such schemes.

In a letter to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, the Telangana minister said, “Instead of selling assets, the central government should explore the possibilities of reviving and strengthening PSUs. If this is not possible then the State Government should be given an opportunity to set up new industrial units in such land.

KTR alleged that the central government’s plan to sell these properties is nothing but a mockery of the rights of the state government.

He alleged that the BJP government was selling Hindustan Cables Ltd., Hindustan Fluorocarbons Ltd., Indian Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Ltd., HMT, Cement Corporation of India. India Ltd. (CCI) and Ordinance factories in Telangana as part of its disinvestment plans.

The minister said several states, including Tamil Nadu, are strongly opposing the Centre’s move to sell PSUs set up in their respective regions.

Criticizing the Central Government for selling PSUs under the guise of disinvestment, he sought to know under what provisions or powers the NDA Government is contemplating the sale of PSUs set up in different states.

“It is unfortunate that the Modi government did not give job opportunities to the unemployed youth. If PSUs are reopened, they will provide direct employment to thousands and indirectly benefit lakhs of people,” KTR said.

The state had allotted around 7,200 acres of land to these six companies. He claimed that the value of these lands would be around Rs 5,000 crore as per government rates and as per open market prices, the value could be more than Rs 40,000 crore.

The state government had allotted land to these companies at marginal prices and, in some cases, it was offered to them free of cost, as the setting up of these units would provide employment to the local people, besides facilitating industrial development and when Telangana The government had requested the central government. For allotting land for construction of skyway to improve transport in Hyderabad, the Center demanded compensation as per market value, he claimed.

In this context, how can the central government sell the lands which were allotted by the state government for setting up public undertakings.
