Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court on Wednesday stayed the passing of an interim order on petitions against the minimum age criterion of six years for admission to Class I in Kendriya Vidyalayas in the upcoming academic year.

The court gave 10 days to the central government and KVS to file their counter-affidavits and listed the matter for further consideration on April 5.

Justice Rekha Palli said there was “prima facie something” in the petitions and that the authorities cannot bring in changes “at the last minute”.

The court said that it is not going to interfere with the National Education Policy (NEP) but the manner in which it is to be followed has to be sorted out.

Central government’s counsel Apoorva Kurup said it would be better if the court decides the issue at the end before it instead of passing an interim order.

Advocate Ashok Agrawal, appearing for one of the petitioners, submitted that in some other central government schools, not six years, but five years is mandatory as the minimum age for admission to class I.

Earlier, the court had said that there cannot be two sets of schools in a city for the same education – one requires a minimum age of six years to apply for class I and the other five years.
