La Liga: Barcelona Open campaign with goalless draw against Rayo Vallecano

Barcelona were held 0–0 by Rayo Vallecano in their opening game of the La Liga season and captain Sergio Busquets was sent off late.

The Catalans had 21 shots and most of the possession on target at Camp Nou, but were unable to break the deadlock.

Barca boss Xavi began close-season signings including defender Andreas Christensen, winger Rafinha and striker Robert Lewandowski, who were only able to feature after having registered with the league late on Friday.

The five-time Champions League winners had to follow strict La Liga financial controls before the new campaign was able to confirm the choice of former Bayern Munich attacker Lewandowski in their squad.

“We could have won, but now we have to correct our mistakes and think about Real Sociedad next weekend,” said Barcelona defender Eric Garcia.

“We wanted to start the season on the right foot and win, but we knew that Rayo had given us a lot of trouble last year. They were good defensively tonight.”

The hosts dominated the opening half hour as Lewandowski was denied a goal on his competitive debut.

The Poland forward was judged for being offside by an Ousmane Dembele pass before his delicately chipped finish was cancelled.

Pedri came close to breaking the stalemate with a 10-minute half to play as temperatures at Camp Nou hit 26 °C (79 °F), but her curling effort went past the post.

Despite taking control of his first half, Mark ter Stegen ensured the side remained level at the break with a fine save to stop Reo’s lvaro García in injury time.

Barca continued their attack on the Rayo defense but were unable to beat goalkeeper Stoll Dmitrievsky, who was involved in two heavy collisions on his line within the first 10 minutes of the second half.

With half an hour to play, Xavi brought in Frankie de Jong for Gavi, while the Netherlands midfielder was linked with a move to lighten club loans from Catalunya, which saw Lionel Messi leave 12 months earlier. Compelled to.

Falcao passes by

Xavi’s Rio counterpart Andoni Iraola also made changes in the last 30 minutes, including making his competitive debut for experienced Colombian striker Radamel Falcao.

United had nine minutes left with Lewandowski, but the 33-year-old’s shot skimmed straight.

Seven minutes later another Barca Summer signing was denied a goal as midfielder Frank Casey, who had come from AC Milan, was offside before defeating Dmitrievsky.

Xavi’s side finished the game with 10 men as club captain Busquets was given a red card for an elbow on Falcao in the fourth of eight injury-time minutes.

Less than 60 seconds later, Falcao thought he had scored the winner, and claimed Rayo’s third straight win over the Catalans, but was found offside and the visitors held for point.

Earlier, 21-year-old winger Alex Baena scored twice in his eighth La Liga appearance as Villarreal beat Real Valladolid 3-0.

Forward Joselu claimed a point in a 2–2 draw for Espanyol in Celta Viga in the 97th minute when veteran Galicians striker Iago Aspas scored his first goal of the season for a third consecutive campaign.

On Sunday, champions Real Madrid promoted Almería, while Atletico Madrid head south to face Getafe on Monday.

On Friday, Osasuna defeated Champions League qualifier Sevilla 2-1 in the opening match of the campaign.
