La Liga Title Race Wide Opens As Real Madrid and FC Barcelona Stutter

Real Madrid and Barcelona have long dominated LaLiga, with 15 of their last 17 titles between them, but times are changing. Following the success of Spanish giants led by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, last season Atletico Madrid broke the title race for the second time in eight years and it could be a sign of a new era. Real Sociedad are the fast-moving players in the league as they are three points ahead of Real Madrid, Sevilla and Betis. With Sociedad only five points away from seventh-placed Osasuna, the race for the league title this year appears to be tight. In fact Barcelona are not even in that mix as they are ninth and nine points behind the leaders.

Real Sociedad isn’t the only surprise package of the season. Rayo Vallecano and Osasuna, who are both tied with Atletico on 19 points, took points from Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively in midweek LaLiga action.

Following their relegation from the top flight in 2019, Rayo earned promotion last season and are now a surprisingly high-flyer – the only team to win all their home games this season.

His last victory was the most significant – a 1-0 win over Barcelona on Wednesday, which led to the sacking of Ronald Koeman as Catalan coach. Rio hosted Celta Vigo on Monday.

Osasuna has been as influential as Ryo but his biggest achievements have come away from home. He has the best LaLiga record on the road this season, having won all his away games until Wednesday’s 0-0 draw at Real Madrid.

They will face yet another big challenge to keep their momentum alive when they travel to Andalusia to face Sevilla on Saturday.

Trying to keep up with Real Sociedad’s momentum, Real Madrid travel to Alicante to face Elche in the opening kickoff of the day.

As for Barcelona, they will host Aleves in the late game, with Barca B coach Sergi Barjuan in charge as caretaker manager, while the club will attempt to appoint Xavi Hernández.

The former Barca and Spain great is the manager of Qatar’s Al-Sadd and Barca will have to strike a deal with the club.

Other games this weekend include the Basque Country derby, when Real Sociedad hosted Athletic Bilbao, and the clash between Atlético and Real Betis in Madrid.

Betis travels to the Spanish capital, led by former Manchester City and Real Madrid coach Manuel Pellegrini, who has had his best start to the season in 60 years. The last time they had 21 points was in 1963–64 after 11 matches.
