Ladakh to start first edition of Himalayan Film Festival

This festival is a part of the celebration of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ to commemorate 75 years of India’s independence.

Officials said the first edition of the Himalayan Film Festival will begin in Ladakh’s capital Leh from September 24.

The five-day film festival being organized by the administration of the Union Territory of Ladakh in collaboration with the Directorate of Film Festivals (DIFF) and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting will conclude on September 28.

Union Information and Broadcasting, Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Anurag Singh Thakur will be the chief guest in the program.

This festival is a part of the celebration of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ to commemorate 75 years of India’s independence. In keeping with PM Narendra Modi’s call of ‘Jan Bhagidhari’, the film festival will see active participation of local filmmakers and showcase talent from various Himalayan states and union territories.

Selected Indian panorama films will be screened during the film festival, apart from popular films from Assam, Sikkim, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh.

Masterclasses on editing by Priya Krishnaswamy, wildlife by Nallamuthu, direction by Neela Madhab Panda and acting by Phonsok Ladakhi will also be held during the festival. The masterclass aims to provide budding as well as established filmmakers with the necessary skills and networking opportunities.

Noted film personalities including Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Anupama Chopra, Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Kirti Kulhari will be part of the in-interaction session.

There will also be a competition section for short films and documentaries to recognize the talented filmmakers of the Himalayan region.

Sidharth Malhotra’s latest release “Shershaah”, a biopic on Kargil war hero Captain Vikram Batra, will be screened at the opening ceremony, while “The Shepherds of Glacier” will bring down the curtain.
