Ranchi: Former Bihar Chief Minister and RJD President Lalu Prasad arrived at Ranchi’s Birsa Munda International Airport on Sunday afternoon to appear before the special CBI court, which will deliver its verdict in the fodder scam case on Tuesday.
The 73-year-old leader was warmly received outside the airport by workers and leaders of the Jharkhand unit of RJD. Lalu held brief talks with state leaders before going to the State Guest House in Morhabadi, where he would stay for three days.
Lalu will appear in the court of Special CBI Judge SK Shashi in the fodder case. The case pertains to fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 139.35 crore from Ranchi’s Doranda treasury during 1995-96, when Bihar was undivided and Lalu was its chief minister.
Lalu is an accused in the case along with 99 others, who are to be present in the hearing. Earlier, Lalu was convicted and sentenced to jail by a CBI court in four other similar fodder cases. He was sentenced to jail on January, 2018 and was imprisoned in Hotwar Jail in Ranchi.
However, his health deteriorated and he was shifted to the paying ward of Rajendra Institute of Medical Science, where he was kept under the supervision of doctors for his chronic ailments before being referred to AIIMS in New Delhi in January 2021. He was granted bail on health grounds. April last year.
Lalu reached Ranchi with his personal secretary Bhola Yadav, former Bihar finance minister Abdul Bari Siddiqui, Shyam Rajak and other RJD stalwarts. However, Lalu did not talk to the media.
Lalu is scheduled to meet RJD officials and workers on Monday.
