Lata Mangeshkar health update: Veteran singer is doing well, confirms niece Rachna Shah

Singer Lata Mangeshkar is recovering well and continues to be in the ICU according to her family. The 92-year-old singer tested positive for coronavirus with mild symptoms and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Breach Candy Hospital in south Mumbai on Saturday (January 8). Sharing an update on Mangeshkar’s health, his niece Rachna Shah on Thursday said that the singer is healthy.

“She is doing well and we are happy with it. Everyone’s prayers have worked. Please take care of our privacy,” Shah told PTI.

On Thursday (January 13), doctors noticed a slight improvement in his health. Dr Pratit Samdani, who is treating Lata Mangeshkar, said, “She is still in the ICU ward but her health has improved slightly.”

Earlier, Shah had told PTI that Mangeshkar was admitted to the ICU as he required “continuous care” due to his age. “She is mild COVID positive. Looking at her age, doctors advised us that she should stay in ICU as she requires constant care. And we cannot take any chances. As a family we want the best. and want to ensure that she is taken care of 24X7,” she had said.

In November 2019, Mangeshkar was admitted to the same hospital after he complained of difficulty in breathing and developed pneumonia. He was discharged after 28 days.

Regarded as one of the greatest singers of Indian cinema, Mangeshkar began her career in 1942 at the age of 13 and has over 30,000 songs to her name in several Indian languages. In his career spanning over seven decades, he has sung many memorable songs like “Ajeeb Dastan Hai Yeh”, “Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya”, “Neela Asman So Gaya” and “Tere Liye”.

Known as the Nightingale of India, the singer has been bestowed with several awards and accolades including the Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan and Dadasaheb Phalke Awards and several National Film Awards.

She is also the recipient of Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award.
